Ever wondered about the silent stories held within Stockholm’s grand old buildings? Studentpalatset stands proudly on Norrtullsgatan. Its history whispers tales of learning and collaboration. Originally called Juridicum it housed Stockholm University’s law and humanities faculties. Think of the countless lectures debates and quiet study sessions that filled its halls.

Studentpalatset was more than just classrooms. It was a hub for intellectual minds. The Department of Human Geography was the last university department to occupy the space. They left in 1997. This magnificent building wasn’t left empty. In 1998 it was reborn as Studentpalatset. A dedicated study and meeting space for students from Stockholm’s universities.

For decades it provided a haven for students. A quiet yet inspiring atmosphere for learning and collaboration. Imagine the hushed whispers of focused students. Picture the lively discussions in its many rooms. The building provided 290 quiet study spaces. Eighteen group rooms were also available. It even had a small café. Studentpalatset wasn’t just a place to study. It was a social center a community hub for the city’s university students.

Built between 1925 and 1927 Studentpalatset is a stunning example of Nordic Classicism. Architect Erik Lallerstedt’s design is striking. The façade boasts a high rusticated base. The upper part is painted in a red ochre color that lets the brick structure show through. The gable features four tall whitewashed Corinthian columns.

The three entrance portals are flanked by four columns with sculptures by Ivar Johnsson. These sculptures depict the heads of four prominent figures from ancient Greece. From south to north you’ll find Socrates Plato Aristotle and Sophocles. The interiors are equally impressive showcasing stucco and marble with many classicizing details.

Sadly Studentpalatset’s time as a student center ended in 2021. Stockholms University closed it due to increased study spaces at Albano campus. However the building’s legacy lives on. In 2022 the Stockholm School of Economics took ownership. Studentpalatset remains an important part of Stockholm’s academic history. It continues to stand as a symbol of the city’s rich academic heritage. A testament to the power of learning and community. Its story continues to unfold.
