Slipping through time, imagine RAAF Stores Park during World War II. RAAF Stores Park wasn’t a park then. It was a vital cog in Australia’s war effort, officially known as RAAF Stores Depot No. 6. Chosen for its inland location, far from vulnerable coastal areas, RAAF Stores Park became a hidden hub of activity. The existing cypress pine forest and the Dubbo to Molong railway line provided both camouflage and essential transport links.

RAAF Stores Park at Dubbo became one of two key RAAF stores depots in New South Wales. Its strategic placement within the “Strategic Land Corridors” connecting Bourke, Sydney, and Melbourne made it ideal for supplying crucial resources. Its proximity to the “Brisbane Line,” a defensive plan in case of Japanese invasion, added another layer of importance. Formed in Waterloo, Sydney, as No. 5 Stores Depot, it was swiftly relocated and renamed No. 6, settling into its new life at Dubbo. The site housed a fascinating array of structures, including Bellman Hangars, Igloo storage buildings, a Sidney Williams Hut, and even a semi-underground PBX bunker for communications. RAAF Stores Park became a storehouse of vital aircraft parts, wireless equipment, ammunition, and bombs, all contributing to the war effort.

The layout of RAAF Stores Park was a masterpiece of deception. Streets mimicked the patterns of surrounding suburbs. Buildings were strategically placed to minimize shadows. Garden beds sprang up, brimming with vegetables, all to create the illusion of a normal town extension from above. Even the enormous Igloo buildings were camouflaged to resemble hills, their profiles softened with galvanized iron cutouts shaped like trees. The use of prefabricated buildings, like the Igloos, Bellman Hangars, Sidney Williams Hut, and the Rabaul Store, showcased innovative construction techniques. These methods were born from necessity, allowing rapid construction across Australia to meet the escalating demands of war.

The life of RAAF Stores Park extended far beyond World War II. Unlike many other depots that were disbanded, it remained active until the 1990s. It transitioned into a receiving store for surplus stock and weapons. It played a crucial role in flood relief efforts in 1955, assisting both town and bush fire brigades. After the war, RAAF Stores Park continued to serve the community. It housed workshops, hosted the East Coast Plague Locust Commission, and even served as a rehearsal space for theatrical productions. Its history intertwines with both military history and local community life. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of wartime construction, a place that adapted and evolved with the times.
