Founded by the Rhenish Missionary Society, let’s explore the story of the Chinese Rhenish Church. This church stands as a testament to faith. Its journey spans decades of change. The Chinese Rhenish Church Hong Kong Synod is a Lutheran denomination. It operates right here in Hong Kong.
The Chinese Rhenish Church joined the Lutheran World Federation in 1974. It maintains close ties with the Hong Kong Lutheran Federation Ltd. The Rhenish group established an outpost in Luohu District. This happened in 1898. The church persevered through governmental changes and conflicts.
Despite challenges, faith grew. In 1949, a new home was found at 22 Heping Lu. This translates to Peace Road. Church services were halted during the Cultural Revolution. Pastors returned home to farm. Other units took over the building.
A historic 1978 meeting revived worship. This meeting also initiated reform. In 1983, the Heping Lu location was reclaimed. By 1984, it became Shenzhen’s first church. It was the first to resume services post-Cultural Revolution. The congregation expanded significantly over the years. The government granted them a large plot of land.
In 2002, the Shenzhen Christian Church opened. It was built in the Meilin area. It was designed to resemble Noah’s Ark. The white building houses halls, offices, and dormitories. The original Heping Lu church is gone. A namesake Christian Peace Church exists nearby. A third building became Christian Luohu Church in 2011.
Today, the Chinese Rhenish Church thrives. It actively serves its community. The church offers various activities. These include Sunday worship, youth groups and Bible studies. The Chinese Rhenish Church remains a symbol of faith. It also symbolizes resilience in Hong Kong. It welcomes all who seek solace and spiritual growth.
