Shenzhen’s story began in the Neolithic Age. Around 6,700 years ago people inhabited this land. Fishing and cultivation were the way of life for the Nanyue tribe. They were a subset of the Baiyue tribe.
Emperor Qinshihuang united China in 214 BC. He brought 500,000 people from central China to southern regions. This movement of people influenced the local culture.
During the Song Dynasty, Shenzhen thrived. It was a trade hub. Salt and spices flowed through its markets. Later, during the Yuan Dynasty, the pearl industry emerged.
In 1573, Xin’an County was established. Today, this area includes modern Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Nantou served as the county seat. It was a center for salt, tea, spices, and rice trade.
Xin’an County became Bao’an County as Imperial China weakened. The county government moved temporarily during the War of Resistance against Japan. It relocated to Dongguan County in 1938.
In 1953, the Bao’an county seat moved to Shenzhen Township. The Guangzhou-Kowloon Railway boosted local commerce. Communities began to grow around it.
Shenzhen City replaced Bao’an County in 1979. The city initially fell under Huiyang Prefecture. Soon after, it became a prefecture-level city. Guangdong Province directly governed it.
Shenzhen became China’s first Special Economic Zone in 1980. This designation spurred rapid growth and development. By 1981, Shenzhen gained sub-provincial city status. It mirrored Guangzhou’s administrative level.
The State Council granted Shenzhen greater autonomy in 1988. This positioned it on par with provincial-level cities. It could independently manage its affairs.
