Crofton High School’s story is rooted in overcoming challenges. For years, Crofton students attended Arundel High School. Overcrowding became a major issue. Split sessions were held to manage the growing student body. The community rallied to build a new high school.
For 17 years, Crofton Middle School graduates were split between Arundel and South River High Schools. Residents formed “Build Crofton High School” in 2012. Their persistence paid off. In 2015, a study recommended a new Crofton High School. Construction finally began in November 2017.
Crofton High School opened virtually in September 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The school initially served grades 9 and 10. By 2022, Crofton High School had its first senior class. The first graduating class was the Class of 2023.
Crofton High School’s campus spans 123.89 acres. Its design incorporates nature to create an inspiring environment. The three-story academic building connects to the non-academic building via bridges. An outdoor amphitheater sits between the buildings. Natural light floods the interior. Flexible classrooms and open corridors encourage collaboration. Sustainable features like daylighting and efficient systems are integrated.
The school’s colors are red and black. The mascot is the Cardinal. Crofton High School has a capacity of 1696 students. Enrollment in 2022-2023 was 1805. The school day runs from 8:30 am to 3:18 pm.
