Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a residence hall named after a pioneering woman? That’s Joan Foley Hall. This four-story building is more than just a place to sleep. It’s a chapter in the University of Toronto Scarborough’s evolving story.
Let’s rewind a bit. UTSC wasn’t always envisioned as a residential campus. Back in 1964, it was primarily a commuter school. But students wanted more. They craved community and a place to call home. So, slowly but surely, residences began to appear.
First came the townhouses in the 1970s and 80s. These offered a village-like feel. Aspen, Birch, Cedar, Dogwood and Elm Hall accommodated about 250 students. Fir, Grey Pine, Hickory and Ironwood Hall followed with space for 144 more. Then Juniper, Koa, Larch, and Maple Hall arrived housing 142 residents.
By 1990, UTSC still lagged behind other universities in residence space. The rising cost of off-campus housing made the need even greater. Finally in 2003, Joan Foley Hall opened its doors. It was UTSC’s first apartment-style residence. This building was named after Joan Foley. She was UTSC’s first and only female principal.
Joan Foley Hall offers a different kind of living. It has 58 suites. Each suite can accommodate about 229 students in single bedrooms. Imagine the buzz of students studying together. Think of the late-night conversations and friendships forged within these walls.
Each apartment in Joan Foley Hall includes fully-equipped kitchens with all the essentials. There are living areas with comfortable seating. Each apartment also includes a dining table and chairs and two full bathrooms. Storage is available.
Each floor of Joan Foley Hall has a common lounge. It is a great place for social activity and study. Laundry facilities are available on each floor. There is also a garbage and recycling room on each floor.
Rooms here are not huge. Each single bedroom measures about 120 square feet. They all include a bed chair and desk. Each room also has a built-in wardrobe.
Joan Foley Hall is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to UTSC’s commitment to its students. It provides a supportive environment for upper-year students. The location is also great. Joan Foley Hall is located near the Residence Centre. It overlooks the beautiful Highland Creek Valley.
It’s interesting to note that UTSC has continued to expand its residences. In 2023, Harmony Commons opened. This new residence showcases U of T’s commitment to sustainability.
