Wow What a magnificent structure Annaburg Manor truly is. Right before you stands a Neo-Classical Revival manor. It’s a three-story testament to the vision of Robert Portner a German immigrant who became a renowned brewer. Built between 1892 and 1894 Annaburg served as his summer retreat. Imagine this opulent home filled with the laughter of family and friends.
Annaburg Manor was more than just a summer home. Designed by Gustav Friebus the architect who also worked on the Washington Monument Annaburg incorporated innovative technology. Electricity indoor plumbing and even mechanical air conditioning were integrated into its design. Portner himself patented a method for cooling and purifying air. He installed this same system in his Alexandria brewery.
Annaburg’s design reflects Portner’s love for European architecture. Painted ceiling frescoes imported Italian marble fireplace mantles and ornamental statuary from Greece adorn its interiors. The 2000-acre estate hosted numerous public events until 1919. Sadly Annaburg fell into disrepair after the Portners passed away. The family eventually sold it in 1947. It later served as a nursing home. The City of Manassas acquired Annaburg in 2019. They’re working hard to restore it.
