Slipping through the sleek corridors of Terminal 3 at Toronto Pearson International Airport, have you ever wondered about the stories echoing within these walls? Terminal 3 hasn’t always been the gleaming hub you see today. Opened in 1991, it was originally built to ease the strain on the older terminals, Aeroquay One and Terminal 2. It was initially dubbed the “Trillium Terminal”, a nod to Ontario’s provincial flower, and served as the home base for Canadian Airlines International. Imagine the hustle and bustle of those early days, as Terminal 3 welcomed travelers from near and far. In 1997, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, or GTAA, took over operations of Pearson Airport. They saw the potential of Terminal 3 and invested heavily in a 350-million-dollar expansion project. This was a major undertaking, overseen by a dedicated team known as T3RD. Their work transformed Terminal 3 into the modern marvel we experience today. Think about the sheer scale of that project, the meticulous planning and construction, all while the terminal continued to operate. One of the hidden gems of Terminal 3 is its incredible plane-spotting location. The East Processor Extension, completed in 2006, boasts a huge picture window. This offers a perfect vantage point to watch the ballet of aircraft as they arrive and depart. Did you know that the attached hotel, opened the same day as Terminal 3, has an interesting history? Initially a Swissôtel, it quickly transitioned to a Sheraton Gateway Hotel. It remains a Sheraton today, even after Sheraton became part of the Marriott International family. So next time you pass through Terminal 3, remember it’s more than just steel and glass. It’s a testament to vision, innovation, and the ever-evolving story of Toronto Pearson International Airport.
