Tokyo Bible Baptist Church

Engraved on the wall inside Tokyo Bible Baptist Church, next to the main chapel entry, are words from Revelation 1:9. “For the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.” These words, etched in stone, also grace the weekly bulletin and resonate throughout the church’s online presence. They represent the very heart of Tokyo Bible Baptist Church’s mission. Like any church, they strive for peace and justice. But their core purpose, what sets them apart, is their dedication to the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. Tokyo Bible Baptist Church recognizes its imperfection, an assembly of flawed individuals. Yet, united by this shared purpose, they gather. They worship, study, and reach out to the world. Tokyo Bible Baptist Church’s history is a testament to this dedication. Founded by missionary Timothy Pietsch and Pastor Suzuki Atsushi, its roots trace back to 1936 when Pietsch first arrived in Japan. His missionary work was interrupted by World War II. But he returned, driven by his faith, and established the Tokyo Bible Center in 1949. This center, located on the same site as the current church, became the foundation for Tokyo Bible Baptist Church. The first service was held on Christmas Day, 1950, and regular Sunday services began on January 7, 1951. The Tokyo Bible Center officially became Tokyo Bible Baptist Church on April 7, 1957, with Suzuki Atsushi as its first pastor. The church building itself is designed with intention. Its octagonal sanctuary, formed by two overlapping rectangles, creates three front sides. This unique structure emphasizes the importance of baptism and communion, with the altar, baptismal basin, and communion table each facing the congregation. Recognizing its location at a busy intersection, Tokyo Bible Baptist Church incorporated a corridor around the chapel. This design creates a tranquil space for worship. The all-wooden interior enhances the peaceful atmosphere. The church also features a parking lot and owns a section in the Fuji Reien cemetery for members and their families. Tokyo Bible Baptist Church understands the power of music in conveying the word of God. Their choir sings a cappella each week. They focus on traditional hymns published by Taketo Goki, a renowned figure in Japanese church music who served as the church’s Cantor. Tokyo Bible Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of community.
