“Why horseshoes here?” I overhear a child ask. We are standing before Kutsuwa Jinja. This Shinto shrine has a unique history. Kutsuwa Jinja’s story dates back centuries.

Let’s step back in time. The shrine’s origins are linked to Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was a significant figure in Japanese history. Legend says Ieyasu rested here. He left behind his horse’s horseshoe or perhaps a sandal. Locals enshrined it. Another account suggests they enshrined a horse hoof covering. This gave the shrine its name. “Kutsuwa” means horseshoe.

Kutsuwa Jinja was once called Kengen-sha. It is believed to have been founded between 1182 and 1184. This was during the Juei era.

The shrine became known for healing children’s coughs. It was believed to have spiritual powers against whooping cough. Parents would come seeking a cure. They took home a piece of horseshoe and hemp. These items had been offered at the shrine. If the child recovered they returned with new horseshoes and hemp. Even today horseshoes hang at the shrine.

Before the war, Kutsuwa Jinja attracted worshippers from across the country. People sought its blessings. Today it remains a local treasure.

The main deity enshrined is Yamato Takeru. He is revered as a god of martial valor. People pray for success in overcoming difficulties. They also seek fire protection.

Participate in the traditional prayer. It involves two bows, two claps, and one final bow. This shows respect to the deity. Notice the small size of the shrine. But appreciate the meticulously maintained garden.

The shrine is located in Itabashi. It is close to Nakacho. Kutsuwa Jinja stands as a testament to faith. It connects us to the past. It reminds us of Ieyasu’s era. It also highlights the power of belief. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Feel the peace within this small sanctuary.
