Stepping into the world of design, we find ourselves at the Tokyo Kogakuin College of Technology. Did you know its design students played a part in celebrating a piece of Japanese history? In 2024, the Morihachi, a prominent Japanese confectionery company, approached the college with a unique project. They needed a logo to celebrate their 400th anniversary. Tokyo Kogakuin College of Technology, known for its hands-on approach to education, saw this as a perfect opportunity. The design students dove into the project, immersing themselves in Morihachi’s history and brand identity. Their research led them to the company’s signature symbols: the “Snake Jewel” and the “Dragon.” These became the foundation of their designs, aiming to blend tradition with a fresh perspective. From a total of 15 student submissions, a design by fourth-year student Saki Ryuta emerged victorious. The chosen logo cleverly combined the Snake Jewel and Dragon, representing Morihachi’s rich legacy. This logo wasn’t just a classroom project. It was used in Morihachi’s 400th-anniversary campaign, appearing in advertisements and on product packaging. The students even designed shopping bags, giving them real-world experience. Before its widespread use, the logo debuted at a tea ceremony held at the Eiffel Tower in Paris in November 2024. This gave the students international exposure, highlighting their talent and the college’s practical approach. Tokyo Kogakuin, established in 1959, continually seeks such collaborations. They aim to provide students with practical experience, bridging the gap between education and industry. This project not only celebrated Morihachi’s history but also marked a milestone in the journey of Tokyo Kogakuin’s design students.
