Its story begins in 1933. The building was designed by Yoshimi Uchida. He was a former president of the University of Tokyo. He also designed the Yasuda Auditorium and the main building of the Komaba Museum at the University of Tokyo.

Originally it was built as the Tokyo Research Institute of the Oriental Culture Academy. This was funded by indemnity money from the Boxer Rebellion. The Oriental Culture Academy had institutes in both Tokyo and Kyoto. The Tokyo institute later merged into the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Oriental Culture.

After World War II the building became a training center for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Interestingly, Yasuko Naito a former diplomat also studied here. In 2003, Takushoku University took over.

The Takushoku University International Education Center building has a unique architectural style. It incorporates Japanese taste motifs. This was quite popular at the time. The roof was added at the request of Teiichi Nada. He was the director of the Oriental Culture Academy.

In the late 1990s there were plans to demolish the building. A group of architects and local residents formed a preservation society. They successfully campaigned to save the building. Takushoku University acquired the building. This was conditional on preserving it.

Today the Takushoku University International Education Center primarily serves students. It hosts various academic conferences and public lectures. Though access is limited it remains an important architectural landmark. The survival of the Takushoku University International Education Center.
