Glimpse into the past. Before you stands Tor Cucherna. This is Trieste’s only surviving medieval tower. It is a testament to a time of walled cities and vigilant watchmen.

Tor Cucherna whispers stories of old Trieste. It is a place where the city’s defenses stood strong. Imagine this tower in its prime. It was a vital part of Trieste’s protective walls. Those walls were well-guarded. High towers dominated them. Ditches and defense works surrounded them. Five main doors secured the city. They were double-locked at dusk.

The tower’s name likely comes from the German word “gucken”. It means “to peek”. From this, the local dialect created “cucar”. This makes sense. The tower’s purpose was to keep watch.

Built in the 14th century, Tor Cucherna played a key role. It served as a night surveillance point for the city walls. It was built by the Venetians. The tower is also known as Torre Chiauchiara or Calcara. It stood on the medieval walls. These walls stretched from the Round Bastion of San Giusto Castle.

Interestingly, the city walls were mostly destroyed. This happened after Trieste became a free port in 1719. The city needed room to expand. However, Tor Cucherna was spared. It was converted into a three-story house around 1700 AD. This saved it from demolition.

The tower’s rediscovery is a tale of historical curiosity. Antonio Tribel, a historian from Trieste, made a crucial observation in 1884. He noticed strange and narrow openings while examining a house’s masonry. These were the tower’s slits. The building around it was then removed. This revealed the medieval tower.

Look closely at Tor Cucherna’s structure. The lower part showcases the original sandstone. The upper part is different. It was redone in red bricks during a 1910 restoration. Architect Enrico Nordio led this restoration. He aimed to distinguish the new from the old.

Notice the Guelph-style battlements. They add to the tower’s medieval charm. Tor Cucherna is about ten meters high and five meters wide. Its rectangular shape makes it unique.

Today, Tor Cucherna stands near San Giusto Castle. It is also not far from the Roman theater. It is surrounded by houses and narrow streets. The tower’s current appearance reflects the city’s medieval splendor. It offers a glimpse into Trieste’s rich history. It is a reminder of the city’s strategic importance.

So, as you stand before Tor Cucherna, consider its long history. Imagine the watchmen peering out. They were protecting Trieste from potential threats. This tower is not just a structure. It is a symbol of Trieste’s resilience. It is a window into the past.
