Beneath the emerald canopy of the Atlantic Forest, Parque Natural Estoril unfolds. São Bernardo do Campo cradles this gem. Parque Natural Estoril isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. In 1953, Mayor Lauro Gomes saw the potential of this land. He envisioned a sanctuary, a place where the city could breathe. A deal was struck with the Light Company. Their 60,000 square meter plot became the foundation of Parque Natural Estoril. Construction began in 1954. Paths were carved through the forest. Quiosques offered shelter. Restrooms were built. A well was dug. On May 1st, 1955, Parque Natural Estoril opened its gates. It welcomed visitors into its embrace. Fast forward to 2013. Parque Natural Estoril’s status was elevated. It became a Conservation Unit. This ensured the protection of the precious Atlantic Forest ecosystem. The park’s official name now honors Virgílio Simionato: Parque Natural Municipal Estoril – Virgílio Simionato. Today, Parque Natural Estoril spans over 373,000 square meters. Over 90% of this area remains a vibrant fragment of preserved Atlantic Forest. Within its boundaries lies a zoo, the Municipal Zoological Garden. Over 270 animals representing 70 species call it home. From playful monkeys to majestic jaguars, the zoo offers a glimpse into Brazil’s rich biodiversity. There’s also the Escola Livre de Sustentabilidade. It teaches visitors about environmental stewardship. The open-air museum adds a touch of artistic flair to the natural landscape. Parque Natural Estoril offers a variety of attractions. You can glide across the Billings Reservoir on a cable car. Or explore the tranquil waters by pedal boat, stand-up paddleboard, or kayak. Hiking trails wind through the forest. They invite you to discover hidden wonders. A designated swimming area provides a refreshing escape. Picnic areas offer a place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Quiosques and food stalls provide sustenance. Parque Natural Estoril is more than just a park. It’s a place where nature and culture intertwine. It’s a place where history whispers through the leaves. It’s a place where the city meets the wild. It’s Parque Natural Estoril, a sanctuary in the heart of São Bernardo do Campo.
