Picture this a striking tent-like structure rising against the Cologne skyline. This is the Zeltkirche Kippekausen a unique architectural gem. It’s not your typical church. The Zeltkirche Kippekausen boasts a remarkable design. Its high-rising roof is a wooden marvel. This rests on only four corner points. From the inside it forms an octagonal star shape.
The Zeltkirche Kippekausen’s story begins in 1959. The Evangelical Church community acquired the land in the Kippekausen park settlement. The space was perfect. It allowed for the construction of a church a community center and a rectory. Cologne architect Georg Rasch designed the complex. On July 24 1965 the foundation stone was laid. This was also the topping-out ceremony.
The Zeltkirche Kippekausen was completed in 1967. It offers space for 400 people. The building sits next to a pond adding to its tranquil atmosphere. The community center opened the same year on Palm Sunday March 19. A large assembly hall a rectory and a sacristan’s apartment are also in the center. In 1979 the center was expanded to include a library.
The name Zeltkirche Kippekausen meaning Tent Church is unique. The community officially adopted this popular name in 2009. This reflects the church’s distinctive shape. Above the altar hangs a replica of the Helmstedt Cross. This dates back to around 1060. The Zeltkirche Kippekausen’s organ was built by Oberlinger. It was first played on May 14 1972. The instrument is impressive. It boasts 24 stops spread across two manuals and the pedal board.
In 2014 the Zeltkirche Kippekausen achieved official recognition. It was added to the list of listed buildings in Bergisch Gladbach as monument number 174. It stands as a testament to its significant architectural and historical value. The Zeltkirche Kippekausen continues to serve its community. It remains a beautiful example of 20th-century religious architecture. Its unique design makes it a memorable landmark in Cologne.
