Kazimierz Lisiecki or Dziadek wasn’t just a teacher. He was a savior to countless children. He dedicated his life to street children. Warsaw’s lost and forgotten youth found solace in his care. He understood their struggles. He knew the hardship of a life on the streets. He himself had known such a life.
Born in 1902 Dziadek’s childhood was marked by tragedy. He lost his mother and siblings to typhus. His father disappeared during World War I. He found refuge in a boarding house. He learned resilience. He learned compassion.
He founded the Society of Friends of Street Children. He established Ogniska places of refuge warmth and education for children. These weren’t just shelters they were homes. Dziadek made sure his children were never hungry. They had a safe place to sleep. They received an education.
These Ogniska were scattered throughout Warsaw. There was one on Hipoteczna Street then on Senatorska Street. Others appeared on Środkowa Street Nowy Zjazd Street and finally Długa Street. The last one was officially opened by President Ignacy Mościcki in 1938.
Even during the brutal Nazi occupation the Ogniska survived. Dziadek and his team ensured his children survived. They found ways to feed them. They kept them safe. During the Warsaw Uprising the Ognisko on Długa Street became a symbol of resilience. It faced shelling and fires. Despite the danger the children continued their daily lives.
Tragically three of Dziadek’s closest colleagues perished in a bomb blast. He remained steadfast in his mission. He was eventually forced to evacuate with many of his children to Giełzów.
After the war Dziadek returned to Warsaw. He resumed his work helping war orphans. He reopened the Ogniska. He tirelessly worked to establish new centers. He saw new Ogniska flourish in Muranów Gdynia and even a mountain resort in Sopotnia Wielka.
Dziadek’s legacy lives on. His work influenced the creation of the State Association of Educational Centers. He finally received the recognition he deserved. He received state decorations and the Order of the Smile.
