From its humble beginnings in a room within the University’s original building Fisher Library now stands tall. A testament to the vision of Thomas Fisher a generous benefactor. He left a substantial bequest to establish and maintain a library. This was in 1885 a pivotal moment in the library’s history.

Fisher Library’s story isn’t just about books. It’s a narrative of compromise and vision. The university debated how to use Fisher’s gift. Some wanted a grand building. Others prioritized buying books. A compromise was reached. A portion funded a building while the rest endowed a book fund.

The original Fisher Library opened in 1909. Its reading room was classic Gothic style. However the book stacks were surprisingly modern boasting electric lifts. This blend of old and new set the stage for Fisher Library’s future.

The library moved to its current location in 1962. What looks like one large building is actually two connected structures. Fisher North houses undergraduate texts computer labs and special collections. Fisher South is home to the East Asian collection University Archives and quieter study spaces.

Remarkably a staff member discovered a lost Giorgione sketch in the Rare Books section. This sketch provided a definitive date and cause of death for the artist. The information was hidden in a 1497 edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy. It had been missing for over 500 years.

Fisher Library holds countless stories within its walls. From its early days to its remarkable discoveries it represents scholarship and perseverance. It continues to serve students and researchers a vital hub of learning and discovery. A vital and remarkable resource at the heart of the University of Sydney.
