What whispers echo within these walls? We stand before Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Stone Ridge, Virginia. It’s a relatively young church, established in 1984. Its story speaks of a growing community and the unwavering faith that built a spiritual home. Corpus Christi’s journey began not in a grand edifice, but in shared spaces. The first services were held at the Bonita Golf Club on Sweetwater Road. They also rented space from Good Shepard Episcopal Church from 1984 through 1988. Imagine attending mass amidst the scent of freshly cut grass or the quiet reverence of another denomination’s sanctuary. By 1989, the congregation had grown significantly. They moved their worship to a former hardware store next to the Bonita Post Office. Parishioners affectionately nicknamed this temporary space “Holy Hardware”. This resourceful spirit reflects the dedication of Corpus Christi’s early members. One of them, Deacon Jim Hitch, recalled the challenges and humor of those nomadic years. In 1986, the parish purchased land in Bonita Long Canyon. This marked the beginning of their dream of a permanent home. Under the leadership of Reverend John G. Proctor, Jr., who became pastor in 1986, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 10, 1989. On Christmas Eve 1990, the first mass was held in the newly constructed church on Corral Canyon Road. Deacon Jim Hitch continued his service to the growing parish. The church continued to flourish. In 2009, Corpus Christi celebrated its 25th anniversary. This also marked the groundbreaking for a new Parish Hall. Bishop Robert H. Brom of San Diego led the celebratory mass. The Parish Hall was dedicated on June 25, 2011. This signified a new chapter in the church’s life. Later that year, the former CCD classrooms were transformed into a preschool. Leanna Zarzar Prelle served as its founding director. Corpus Christi’s journey embodies the spirit of community and faith. It is a testament to the power of shared vision and dedicated service.
