Five stars gleam. They adorn the halo of the oldest statue on Prague’s Charles Bridge. This is the statue of Saint John Nepomuk a bronze masterpiece.

This isn’t just any statue. It’s a powerful symbol. It commemorates a priest who met a tragic end. John of Nepomuk’s story is one of faith and defiance. It’s a story etched in bronze. It’s a story whispered on the wind that blows across the Vltava River.

The statue depicts John as a bearded priest. He leans slightly. He holds a crucifix and a martyr’s palm. His story begins centuries ago. He lived during the reign of King Wenceslas IV. He was the queen’s confessor. He refused to reveal her confessional secrets. This defiance cost him his life. The king ordered him thrown into the Vltava. Legend says five stars shone above the river on that fateful night. This explains the stars in his halo.

The statue itself is a testament to artistic skill. Matthias Rauchmiller crafted the initial clay model. Jan Brokoff then created a large wooden sculpture. This wooden version is now gilded. It resides in the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk on the Rock. The final bronze casting was completed by Wolfgang Hieronymus Heroldt in Nuremberg. The statue arrived on the bridge in 1683. This was supposedly the 300th anniversary of the saint’s death. However historians now believe he died a decade later.

But the story doesn’t end there. A tradition arose. People touch the bronze plaques beneath the statue. They make wishes. This tradition might have originated as recently as 1991. A tour guide or perhaps some students started it. Regardless the statue of Saint John Nepomuk remains a focal point. It’s a symbol of faith perseverance and a reminder of Prague’s rich history. It’s a place where wishes are made and legends live on. This is the story of Saint John Nepomuk the martyr whose legacy continues to inspire. His statue stands as a silent witness on the Charles Bridge. It stands as a beacon of faith.
