Right here stands a testament to a turbulent past. This is the site of the Slunce Statue. But its story begins not with the sun, but with a shadow.

Let’s journey back to a time of Soviet influence. Prague, like much of Czechoslovakia, found itself under communist rule. In 1955, a colossal monument to Joseph Stalin was unveiled here. It was intended to showcase Stalinist ideology. The statue quickly became the world’s largest representation of Stalin.

Imagine a granite giant dominating the skyline. The Stalin Monument stood 15.5 meters tall. It stretched 22 meters long. It weighed a staggering 17 million kilograms. Thirty thousand granite slabs formed its imposing figure.

Construction was a massive undertaking. Forced labor was used to complete the monument. Laborers lived in harsh conditions. They were housed in wooden barracks with minimal facilities. These workers were deemed politically unreliable.

Otakar Švec was the sculptor. He titled the monument “A Monument to Love and Friendship.” Yet, tragically, Švec committed suicide just days before its unveiling.

But Stalin’s reign didn’t last. He died in 1953. De-Stalinization began soon after. The monument became a symbol of a past the country wanted to forget.

So, in 1962, the Stalin Monument was demolished. Eight hundred kilograms of explosives brought it down. The remains now lie in chambers beneath our feet.

Now, where the Stalin Monument once stood, we find a different symbol. In 1991, a giant kinetic sculpture of a metronome was erected on the pedestal. It marks time. It also symbolizes a new era for Prague.

The green plaque below the Metronome tells this story. It states the monument did not tower for long over the medieval center of Prague. In connection with Soviet criticism of Stalin’s cult of personality, the work was dynamited. It was removed towards the end of 1962.

But where does the Slunce Statue fit into all of this? The Slunce Statue “Sun” is the name of a granite statue by Josef Vajce.

Today, the area is a popular spot. Skateboarders and others gather here. They use the remaining socle as a meeting place. The City of Prague has considered redeveloping the site. But the legacy of the Stalin Monument remains. It echoes in the space now occupied by the Slunce Statue.

So, when you look at the Slunce Statue, remember its full history. Remember the shadow that preceded it and the hope for a brighter future. It is a story etched in stone and time. A story of oppression, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Prague.
