Regarding billboards, have you ever seen one that is an entire building? That is the Uniqa Tower. The Uniqa Tower is an office building next to the Danube Canal. It stands in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district.
The Uniqa Tower is not just any building. It’s a statement of modern architecture and environmental consciousness. The Uniqa Tower earned the European Union Green Building label. It was Austria’s first building to get this honor. It was also one of Europe’s first.
The Uniqa Tower’s story began in October 2001. Construction finished in June 2004. The official opening was on June 25, 2005. The Uniqa Insurance Group owns the tower. The tower cost about 70 million euros to build. Heinz Neumann from Vienna was the architect.
Let’s look at some numbers. The Uniqa Tower is 75 meters tall. That equals about 246 feet. It has 21 upper floors and five basement floors. The total floor area is 38,500 square meters. That is about 414,000 square feet.
Look at the building’s shape. The floor plan is a stylized “Q”. This represents the Uniqa Insurance Group logo. The facade is a media display. It features a dot matrix of LEDs. More than 40,000 pixels make up the facade. This includes about 160,000 individual LEDs. The system uses video components. It runs at 25 frames per second. Licht Kunst Licht designed the lighting. Holger Mader, Alexander Stublic, and Heike Wiermann created the media art concept. Barco, a Belgian company, handled the technology.
One unique aspect is its sustainability. One third of the building’s energy comes from a heat pump. Geothermal heating also helps.
The Uniqa Tower aims to blend into the city. It seeks to connect the Inner City and Leopoldstadt areas. The tower’s design reflects two goals. It marks the district boundary. It also provides a smooth transition between city areas. The ground floor connects to pedestrian paths. This enhances the street area. The building’s height matches its neighbors.
At the top, there is an amazing space. It is between the two L-shaped parts of the building. This terrace lounge is fully glazed. Its ascending structure gives great views of Vienna. Employees and visitors can access planted roof gardens. These gardens filter the area between building sections. Inside, the design allows for maximum flexibility. The sixteenth floor has been remodelled. It is a New Work scenario. The office promotes teamwork and personal growth.
The Uniqa Tower is more than offices. It is a symbol. The Uniqa Tower is Vienna’s modern spirit. It also displays sustainability.
