In 1971, the first unit of Oi Thermal Power Station roared to life. This marked a significant moment for Tokyo’s energy landscape. Here at the Oi Thermal Power Station, in Shinagawa, Tokyo, three massive units hummed with power. These units, fueled by crude oil, generated a combined 1,050 MW of electricity. Oi Thermal Power Station played a vital role in powering Tokyo for decades. The station occupied a sprawling 190 km2 site. This made it a prominent landmark in the city. The second unit came online in February 1972. The third and final unit joined in December 1973. While the power station itself was decommissioned in March 2022, the site found new life. It became home to the Tokyo Oi Hydrogen Station. This station, opened in August 2020, carries on the legacy of energy production. It now produces hydrogen from city gas. This helps to power a cleaner, more sustainable future for Tokyo.
