Twelve cannons once stood silent. This is Fort Chaplin Park. It’s a small park but it holds a big story. Right here in Southeast Washington DC Fort Chaplin played a vital role in the Civil War defenses. Built in early 1864 by the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery it protected Fort Mahan’s flank. Imagine the soldiers toiling to build these earthworks. They were creating a defensive line to protect our nation’s capital.

Fort Chaplin was never fully armed. Only one 24-pounder siege gun was ever mounted. Eleven emplacements remained empty. Despite its incomplete armament Colonel Barton S Alexander considered it crucial. He believed its position had to be held against any land attack. It’s a testament to strategic planning even if the guns remained largely silent. The fort had a perimeter of about 225 yards at an altitude of around 180 feet.

The fort’s namesake Colonel Daniel Chaplin sadly didn’t live to see its completion. A Confederate sharpshooter’s bullet struck him at Deep Bottom Virginia. He died three days later on August 20 1864. His sacrifice is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war. After the war the army returned the land to its original owner Selby B Scaggs. There were no buildings left behind. Just the earthworks a silent testament to a pivotal point in history.

Today Fort Chaplin Park stands as a tranquil green space. Yet beneath the grass lie the remains of a vital Civil War fortification. It’s a place of quiet reflection a subtle reminder of the battles fought and the lives lost to preserve our nation. As you walk through this park remember the history beneath your feet. Remember Colonel Chaplin and the soldiers who built this silent guardian of Washington DC. Remember that the earth itself holds a story waiting to be discovered.
