Dream with me for a moment. Imagine stepping into a tranquil oasis of faith and history right here in Washington D.C. It’s the Franciscan Monastery and Memorial. This isn’t just any church. It is a unique place where the Holy Land comes to America.

The Franciscan Monastery and Memorial stands as a testament to devotion. It embodies architectural beauty and spiritual significance. We are on Mount Saint Sepulcher. This hill in Brookland provides a serene setting for this incredible complex.

Let’s go back to the late 19th century. The Very Reverend Charles A. Vassani had a vision. He wanted to create a Holy Land in America. Father Godfrey Schilling, O.F.M., joined him. They initially considered Staten Island. But they ultimately chose Brookland in Washington, D.C.

In 1897, Father Godfrey purchased the McCeeney Estate. The six Brothers lived in the abandoned McCeeney house. Imagine Father Schilling traveling to the Holy Land. He meticulously took measurements and photographs of the Holy Sites. In February 1898, ground was broken. The cornerstone was laid on the Feast of St. Joseph.

The Memorial Church of the Holy Sepulcher is a sight to behold. Aristide Leonori designed it. The cornerstone was laid in 1898. Construction finished in 1899. Its design reminds us of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The floor plan loosely resembles the fivefold Jerusalem cross. It has neo-Byzantine style similar to Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. There are also Romanesque influences.

The Rosary Portico surrounds the church. John Joseph Earley designed it. Fifteen chapels depict the mysteries of the Rosary. Each chapel has plaques. These plaques bear the Hail Mary in nearly two hundred languages. The Rosary Portico reminds us of the Cloister of St. John Lateran in Rome.

Attached to the Church is the neo-Romanesque Monastery. The grounds hold replicas of shrines in the Holy Land. You will find a Lourdes grotto here and a replica of the Porziuncola.

The Franciscan Monastery and Memorial also houses a library and archives. They contain materials about the Holy Land. They document the monastery’s early development and monastery life.

Music fills the air here. A Lively-Fulcher organ was installed in 2003. It replaced the Henry Pilcher Sons Opus 1481. Monthly recitals provide a beautiful experience.

The Franciscan Monastery and Memorial is more than a religious site. It is a place of history, art, and culture. It earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. In 2022, the Archdiocese designated it for Sunday celebration of the Tridentine Mass.

As you leave the Franciscan Monastery and Memorial, remember its unique role. It preserves the spirit of the Holy Land in America. It inspires all who visit its peaceful grounds.
