Tucked away in the quiet residential streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo, lies the Saianji Nishi-Nenji Temple, more commonly known as Nishi-Nenji Temple. This unassuming temple holds a fascinating history, intertwined with the lives of samurai and noble families. Nishi-Nenji was founded in 1594. It was originally located in the bustling Kiyosumi-cho district. Its founder, Hattori Masanari, wasn’t just a Buddhist priest. He was also a prominent retainer of the Tokugawa Ieyasu, a powerful feudal lord. Hattori founded the temple as a memorial to his late son, Nobuaki. Nobuaki had entered the priesthood as a way of mourning his own deceased father, Ieyasu’s son, Hidetada. A poignant five-tiered stone pagoda, the Shinano (Matsudaira) Nobuaki Kuyo-to, stands as a testament to this filial devotion. You can see it to the right of the main hall. Another relic of the temple’s connection to the Tokugawa family is a stone lantern bearing three hollyhock leaves, the family crest. The lantern is located in the garden near the main hall. Hattori Masanari dedicated the remainder of his life to the temple, even building a dedicated memorial tower for his son within the temple grounds. After Hattori’s death in 1596, he too was laid to rest within the temple. The temple was moved to its current location in 1634. The growth of Edo Castle necessitated its relocation. Today, Nishi-Nenji Temple offers a peaceful escape from the modern frenzy of Tokyo. Within its serene grounds, the echoes of samurai devotion and familial love continue to resonate.
