“A sea of stones, wouldn’t you say?” whispers an old woman tending a nearby grave. We are standing before the Kriegsgräber War Memorial in Stralsund. It’s a sobering sight, row upon row of identical stone crosses marking the final resting place of over 900 souls lost during World War II. Established in 1943, the memorial initially served as an “Ehrenfriedhof” – a cemetery for German soldiers. However, the face of war is indiscriminate. Following the devastating Allied air raid on Stralsund on October 6th, 1944, the Friedhof expanded to accommodate the overwhelming loss of civilian life. Today, the Kriegsgräber War Memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the devastating cost of conflict. It’s a place of quiet reflection, where the weight of history hangs heavy, a stark reminder etched in stone that peace, though fragile, is a treasure worth safeguarding.
