Was natural science always a separate field of study? Not quite. Before 1920 it was part of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. Now we stand before the Faculty of Science Charles University. It is one of the university’s 17 faculties. It emerged to give Czech science its own space.

The Faculty of Science Charles University has a rich history. It has overcome obstacles. Science professors wanted their own space. They pushed for a split from the Faculty of Arts. World War I delayed things. Finally in 1920 the Faculty of Science was born. Karel Petr a mathematician became its first dean.

The Nazi occupation brought dark days. In 1939 the Faculty of Science closed. This was due to Independence Day demonstrations. But it reopened in 1945. The semester began on June 1st full of hope.

Communist rule brought new challenges. The Soviet model of science took hold. Lysenkoism a discredited school of thought was forced upon academics. Political vetting led to the dismissal of many academics. Change came with the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Students from the Faculty of Science joined the demonstration. It began near the dean’s office and helped end communist rule.

The Faculty of Science Charles University excelled even during difficult times. Today it thrives. It engages in broad research. This includes environmental geological chemical and biological disciplines. Faculty staff and students publish many articles annually. The Faculty of Science consistently ranks high. It is a top research institution in the Czech Republic.

The Faculty of Science Charles University is organized into sections. These include Biology Chemistry Geography and Geology. Various departments exist within these sections. They cover diverse fields such as Anthropology Botany and Analytical Chemistry. The Institute for Environmental Studies is a faculty-wide institution. The Botanical Garden also belongs to the Faculty of Science Charles University.

During the COVID-19 pandemic experts from the Faculty of Science became well known. Jaroslav Flegr Václav Hořejší and Dagmar Džúrová provided valuable insights.
