Hidden amidst the lush greenery of Prague’s Troja district stands Sklenářka, a quaint farmstead overlooking the bustling city below. Sklenářka sits atop a hill, offering a unique vantage point. This unassuming building holds centuries of history, from its origins as a vineyard and wine press to its present role as a representation space for Prague Zoo. Sklenářka wasn’t always the peaceful retreat it is today. In the 17th century, it was constructed as a two-story residence. The ground floor housed the estate manager. The upper floor served as a summer retreat for the wealthy owner. The building’s hipped roof and large chimney, enhanced by prominent buttresses, stand as testaments to its historical significance. Inside, the seven-beam ceilings once boasted two layers of polychrome paintings. The older layer, featuring a motif of entwined branches with two shades of green leaves, was later complemented by a newer, black layer depicting branches and grapes. Traces of the original wall paintings were discovered on the window palettes during restoration, suggesting Sklenářka’s construction dates back to the last quarter of the 17th century. Sklenářka continued its transformation in the mid-20th century, becoming accommodation for zoo employees. It remained inhabited until the 1980s, falling into disrepair before undergoing extensive renovations between 1988 and 1990. Sadly, these renovations, while saving the structure, resulted in the loss of its unique interior wall paintings. More recently, in 2011 and 2012, Sklenářka underwent another restoration, this time focusing on preserving its original elements. Today, Sklenářka serves as a space for Prague Zoo representation, a testament to its enduring charm. Interestingly, Sklenářka played a role in the 1931 film “Psohlavci” (Dogheads). The building was nicknamed “Katovna” (Executioner’s house), possibly due to its depiction in the film, which featured a gallows near the building. So, as you stand before Sklenářka, remember its journey through time, from a humble wine press to a cinematic backdrop, a residence, and now a place of honor for Prague Zoo.
