Wonder how North Potomac got its name? It’s a story of tobacco fields transformed and a community finding its identity. Let’s explore this census-designated place in Montgomery County.

North Potomac didn’t exist as a defined place until 1989. Before that, it was farmland and scattered housing subdivisions. The United States Post Office gave North Potomac its name. Before 1989, the area was part of Darnestown and Travilah. In 1990, the Census Bureau officially recognized North Potomac.

Originally, this land grew tobacco and corn. The soil depleted over time. Farmers switched to wheat and dairy farming. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal helped farmers ship their grain. You can still see remnants of this history. Two former canal locks are nearby in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

Even into the 20th century, large dairy farms thrived here. Maple Spring Farm was one of the biggest in Maryland. In the 1970s, much of its land became the Dufief subdivision in North Potomac.

Captain John Smith mapped this area in 1608. The first European settlements appeared in 1688. They were near Rock Creek and Rockville. The indigenous Seneca people had a trail here. Today, it is Darnestown Road.

The DuFief Mill played a crucial role. It was established in 1850. Farmers from afar used it. The mill connected to the C&O Canal. This gave them better access to markets.

Three historic sites still stand in North Potomac. The Maple Spring Barns belonged to a major dairy farm. The Pleasant View Historic Site includes a church and school. The Poplar Grove Baptist Church is a 19th-century African-American church.

North Potomac is conveniently located. It’s near Shady Grove Hospital and the I-270 Technology Corridor. Washington, D.C., is easily accessible.

The Nancy H. Dacek North Potomac Recreation Center offers recreational activities. The Potomac Horse Center provides equestrian training. Several parks offer trails for hiking. The Muddy Branch Greenway Trail is a popular choice.
