Whispers of history echo from Hashiba Fudo-in. This unassuming temple in Tokyo holds secrets older than the city itself.

Hashiba Fudo-in is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to centuries of faith and resilience. Founded in 760 during the Tempyo period it was initially a Hossō sect temple. A significant shift occurred in 1163. The temple was re-organized and converted to Tendai sect becoming a branch temple of Senso-ji.

The story of Hashiba Fudo-in’s principal image is quite remarkable. Legend tells of Roben Sojo a renowned priest who carved three identical statues of Fudo Myoo. One resided in Oyama Temple in present-day Kanagawa Prefecture known as Oyama Fudo. Another remained with Roben himself. The third statue was given to his most devoted disciple Jakusho Shonin. This is the very statue enshrined here at Hashiba Fudo-in. According to the temple’s history Jakusho established a small shrine here in 773 after being divinely inspired to place the statue at this specific location. For over 1250 years this statue has been the object of veneration for local villagers. The temple also possesses a statue of Yakushi Nyorai attributed to Eshin Sozu. This explains why the temple is sometimes called Sunao Yakushi.

The current head priest Kamiya Ryoshu is the one hundredth successor to the line of Hashiba Fudo-in. The current temple building dates from 1845. It retains the elegant architectural style of the Edo period a testament to skillful craftsmanship. The temple is also designated as the 23rd temple on the Kanto Sanjurokufudo pilgrimage.

Hashiba Fudo-in stands as a quiet beacon. It offers a window into Tokyo’s rich past. A place to reflect on the enduring power of faith and the echoes of history that linger within its walls. It is a place worth visiting for anyone interested in history. Or for those seeking a moment of peace amidst Tokyo’s vibrant energy.
