Did the Salvation Army actually start as an army? Here at the Salvation Army in Tokyo, that question might cross your mind. The Salvation Army’s roots trace back to 1865 in England. A Methodist pastor named William Booth felt a powerful calling to help the struggling people of East London. He witnessed widespread poverty, drunkenness, and social ills. Booth began working with volunteers. He quickly realized this wasn’t just volunteer work. It was a burgeoning movement. This movement became known as “The Salvation Army” (Kyuseigun in Japanese). The military-style organization wasn’t meant to mimic an actual army. It was about adopting the structure and discipline for effective social work. William Booth, its founder, became the first General. Ranks, uniforms, and insignia followed. The Salvation Army’s presence in Japan began in 1895. Twelve British officers arrived in Yokohama to start the work here. A key figure in the Japanese Salvation Army was Gunpei Yamamuro. He was the first Japanese Salvation Army officer. He was a renowned preacher and author of “The Common People’s Gospel”. Yamamuro dedicated himself to helping those trapped in difficult situations. His efforts to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium reflect the Salvation Army’s commitment to practical aid. So, the Salvation Army here in Tokyo, and worldwide, continues its mission of service. It offers support and hope to those in need.
