The doors of St Teresa’s Parish – Karori have witnessed countless stories unfold within their hallowed walls. They have stood steadfast, a beacon of faith for the community since 1968. This grand church, built in the heart of Karori, Wellington, serves as a place of solace, spiritual renewal, and communal gatherings. It sits proudly on Karori Road, its presence a comforting reminder of the enduring power of faith in the face of life’s trials and triumphs.
Before St Teresa’s Parish – Karori was built, the Catholic community in Karori found solace in a smaller church, built in 1927. The original red-brick church, a testament to the growing Catholic presence in the area, served the community for over four decades. However, with the expanding population of Karori, the need for a larger place of worship became evident.
In 1968, the new St Teresa’s Parish – Karori was inaugurated with a grand opening ceremony. With a capacity to accommodate a growing congregation, the church became a central hub for Catholic life in Wellington. The Parish, over the years, has witnessed several notable changes, with the influx of different cultural backgrounds enriching its tapestry. The amalgamation of parishes in 2014 saw it become part of the Otari Catholic Parish, encompassing both St Teresa’s Parish – Karori and St Thomas More Church in Wilton.
The parish continues to play a vital role in the lives of many, offering spiritual guidance, education, and a sense of community. From weekly masses to various activities, the church remains a constant presence in the lives of the people of Karori, a place where prayers are answered, and faith is nurtured.
