“Jundiaí, a city etched in the heart of São Paulo,” began our guide, his voice ringing with local pride. “But did you know it was once a quiet haven for two souls fleeing the political turmoil of 17th-century São Paulo?” Our guide, a charismatic storyteller, pointed towards the sprawling cityscape. “Rafael de Oliveira and Petronilha Rodrigues Antunes sought refuge here in 1615, establishing the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Desterro, ‘The Parish of Our Lady of the Landless’. This humble parish would become the seed of Jundiaí, officially founded on December 14, 1655.” He paused, letting the historical weight settle. “Jundiaí’s name itself is a whisper from the past, derived from the indigenous Tupi language. ‘Jundiá’ means ‘fish with barbs’, referring to the Rhamdia quelen catfish, and ‘í’ means ‘river’. So, Jundiaí translates to ‘Catfish River’, a testament to the region’s natural abundance.”

He led us further into the heart of Jundiaí, weaving a tale of Italian immigrants who flocked to the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “Imagine waves of Italian families arriving, transforming the landscape, their culture intertwining with the local traditions.” Their legacy, he explained, is still palpable, with approximately 75% of the city’s population claiming Italian descent. “Jundiaí’s growth story is one of resilience and adaptation.” He highlighted the city’s transformation from a quiet agricultural town to a bustling economic hub, fuelled in part by residents seeking a better life outside the megalopolis of São Paulo. “Jundiaí even has its own ‘Grapeland’ nickname,” he chuckled, “thanks to the Niagara ‘pink’ grape that put the city on the national agricultural map.”

He spoke of the Festa da Uva, the Grape Festival, first held in 1934, a testament to the city’s agricultural prowess. “Picture the vibrant festivities, the aroma of ripe grapes filling the air, a celebration of the city’s bounty.” He contrasted it with the Festa do Morango, the Strawberry Festival, a newer tradition that now alternates with the Grape Festival, held in the Parque Comendador Antonio Carbonari, affectionately known as the Grape Park. “Jundiaí’s story is not just about grapes and strawberries,” he added. “The Serra do Japi mountain range, a state park southeast of the city, is a haven for ecotourism, boasting stunning landscapes and opportunities for adventure.” He described affluent neighborhoods like Jundiahy, with their grand houses and vibrant community businesses. “Even the city’s football club, Paulista, has a tale to tell,” he exclaimed, “champions of the Copa do Brasil in 2005.” As our tour drew to a close, he reminded us that Jundiaí’s history continues to unfold. “From its indigenous roots to its immigrant heritage, Jundiaí embodies the spirit of Brazil – diverse, vibrant, and ever-evolving.”
