Tegetthoff-Denkmal

Amidst the bustling energy of Praterstern in Vienna, rises a monument that whispers tales of naval triumphs. The Tegetthoff-Denkmal, a towering tribute to Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, stands proudly. It captures the spirit of a bygone era. The Tegetthoff-Denkmal was unveiled on September 21, 1886. It commemorates the admiral who led the Austro-Hungarian navy to victory. The monument’s location at Praterstern was no accident. With the nearby Nordbahnhof, Vienna’s main train station at the time, and the popular Wurstelprater amusement park, it guaranteed a large audience. The monument is a striking sight. Atop a five-meter-high pedestal, surrounded by battling seahorses, stands an eleven-meter marble column. The column is adorned with an anchor and bronze ship prows. Crowning the column is a 3.5-meter bronze statue of Admiral Tegetthoff himself. The monument’s creation began in 1871, the year of Tegetthoff’s death. The design process was not without its challenges. An initial competition in 1872 saw Swiss sculptor Ferdinand Schlöth awarded first prize. However, his design faced resistance and was ultimately not realized. Carl Kundmann created the statue we see today. Carl von Hasenauer designed the architectural elements. The unveiling, 20 years after Tegetthoff’s victory at the Battle of Lissa, was a grand affair. Emperor Franz Joseph I himself was present to honor the admiral. The Tegetthoff-Denkmal underwent extensive restoration from 2016 to 2018. The project cost 897,000 euros. The monument now stands as a testament to Tegetthoff’s legacy and the artistry of its creators. As you gaze upon the Tegetthoff-Denkmal, imagine the crowds that gathered here over a century ago.
