Time stood still within Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul. Its Baroque grandeur whispered tales of centuries past. This wasn’t just a church it was a living testament to Vienna’s enduring spirit.

The Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul stands as a beacon of faith and artistry. It boasts a history as rich and layered as its stunning Baroque architecture. Originally built on the site of a Roman encampment this church has witnessed the ebb and flow of empires.

Legend whispers of a Roman church predating even Charlemagne’s reign. Though evidence remains scarce the very stones seem to hum with the echoes of ancient prayers. A Romanesque church replaced its predecessor. This building endured until a devastating fire in 1661.

Emperor Leopold I vowed to rebuild the Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul. This was after Vienna’s plague ravaged its people in 1679-1680. The Fraternity of the Holy Trinity took on the task. The church’s design drew inspiration from St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Gabriele Montani initially oversaw construction. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt later took the reins. Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer crafted the magnificent facade.

Construction began around 1701. By 1722 most of the structure was complete. The Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul was finally consecrated in 1733. It was Vienna’s first domed Baroque church. The oval interior cleverly maximizes space. It’s a compact masterpiece of design.

Inside the Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul gleams with gold stucco. Matthias Steinl masterminded the turreted dome. He also designed the interior’s decoration and cherubic-headed pews. Andrea Pozzo’s initial frescoes were sadly lost. Johann Michael Rottmayr painted the magnificent Coronation of Our Lady fresco in the cupola. J G Schmidt’s brushstrokes depict the four Evangelists and Church Fathers.

The high altar a collaboration between Antonio Galli Bibiena and Martino Altomonte is breathtaking. The altarpiece portrays the healing of the lame. It is a powerful and moving scene. Cardinal Kollonitz’s gift of Roman catacomb martyrs rests in side chapel shrines.

Examine the gilded pulpit another of Steinl’s creations. Opposite stands Lorenzo Mattielli’s stunning Martyrdom of St John of Nepomuk. A statue of the Mother of God crowns this masterpiece. From 1998 to 2004 extensive renovation restored the church’s vibrant colors.

The Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul stands proudly on Petersplatz. Its position among surrounding buildings makes it a hidden gem. Yet once you stand before it the Pfarrkirche St. Peter u. Paul reveals its full splendor. Its beauty and history leave an enduring impression.
