Kněžívka’s story is written in stone. The siliceous rocks the dominant feature here are remarkably resistant to erosion. They formed a prominent elevation even before the Upper Cretaceous sea transgressed. The sea’s powerful waves carved distinctive features into the rock. The Kněžívka quarry offers four distinct paleontological sites. Each one is unique. Each tells a different part of the story. Kněžívka wasn’t always a protected area. Before 1978 laws didn’t always account for natural development in protected areas. This meant places like Kněžívka suffered. Then in 1992 a new law changed everything. Better planning and execution followed. Kněžívka and other protected areas received much-needed attention.
Today Kněžívka is a protected natural monument. It’s a testament to the importance of preserving our geological and paleontological heritage. Its well-preserved Upper Cretaceous deposits with abundant microfauna are invaluable. These fossils help scientists piece together the history of life on Earth. The site is easily accessible by bus 312 from Prague’s Běchovice.
