Tragedy struck during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944. The S.S. Sturmbrigade R.O.N.A. brutally murdered patients and staff. They looted and set fire to the building.

After World War II, the institute reopened. It changed its name to Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute of Oncology. It grew into a specialized research institute and hospital. It became part of the Polish Ministry of Health. Regional branches opened in Gliwice and Kraków. Today, it is Poland’s leading cancer research and treatment center.
