In 2013 the Park-Realschule faced a challenge. Its location on the outskirts of Zuffenhausen resulted in low student numbers. The Schule im Park needed a change.
The Schule im Park wasn’t just any school. It was a vital part of Stuttgart’s educational system. Its history was tied to the evolving needs of the city. The school’s rather peripheral location in Zuffenhausen proved to be a significant obstacle. The low student enrollment simply wasn’t sustainable.
The solution? A relocation to Stammheim. This decision wasn’t made lightly. It followed a careful consideration of regional school development plans. These plans recommended class sizes of around 40 students. Relocating the Schule im Park to Stammheim offered a fantastic opportunity to create a thriving modern school.
The school’s governing bodies supported the move. The Stuttgart City Council approved the plan in April 2014. The transition was gradual. Starting in the 2016-2017 school year classes began moving to Stammheim. Each subsequent year saw new incoming classes established there. By the 2020-2021 school year the relocation was complete. All grades from 1 to 10 were taught in Stammheim. Both the primary school and the secondary school were now under one roof.
The move wasn’t just about changing addresses. The Schule im Park needed new facilities. The existing buildings in Stammheim couldn’t accommodate the increased student population. Significant expansion was needed. A participatory process involving teachers parents and students was launched in 2014 and 2015 to develop a new space concept. This involved numerous workshops to create an educational and organizationally sound plan.
To keep the school running during the construction a temporary building with eight classrooms was erected and occupied in early 2019. A permanent new building with 17 classrooms is planned to be completed by spring 2023. Another building including a canteen will replace the temporary pavilions. Once the new buildings are finished the temporary structure will be demolished. The Schule im Park’s transformation is a testament to the commitment to providing quality education in Stuttgart. This commitment ensures a bright future for the school and its students. The Schule im Park stands as a symbol of growth adaptation and progress.
