Deep within the Coast Mountains, there is a place. This is Capilano River Regional Park. It offers an escape into nature’s embrace.

The Capilano River Regional Park beckons with its rich history. It is also a vital role in Greater Vancouver’s water supply. This park isn’t just a scenic getaway. It is also a crucial part of the region’s infrastructure.

Imagine standing at the Cleveland Dam. This dam forms Capilano Lake. The lake stretches north for over five kilometers. Forty percent of the region’s drinking water comes from here. Water treatment facilities stand adjacent to the dam. A tunneling project connects the reservoir to the Seymour Dam. This ensures a reliable water supply for the entire region.

Downhill from the dam sits the Capilano Fish Hatchery. Admission is free. The hatchery welcomes around 238,000 visitors each year. It significantly contributes to the coho and steelhead populations in Burrard Inlet. Inside the hatchery, educational displays explain the work that is done there. These displays showcase the life cycles of the local fish. You can also view a cross-section of an active fish ladder. During spawning seasons, fish use the ladder to bypass the dam.

Beyond its functional aspects, the Capilano River Regional Park offers recreational opportunities. The rugged waters of the Capilano River attract kayakers and canoeists. Nature and biking trails wind through the park. The Capilano River Regional Park’s stunning scenery has made it a popular location for film and television. MacGyver, Smallville, and Twilight: New Moon were filmed here.

To get here, take Capilano Road in North Vancouver. Parking lots are available at the Cleveland Dam and the fish hatchery. TransLink bus routes 232 and 236 stop near the park entrances. Hikers can also access the park from various trails in West and North Vancouver.

But be warned. The Capilano River can be dangerous. In 2021, a public alarm system was added after two people died. They died as a result of an unexpected increase of water flow. Metro Vancouver operates the Cleveland Dam. They want to warn visitors of rapid water releases from the dam.

Don’t forget the annual charity duck race on the Capilano River. Each March, thousands of yellow rubber ducks float down the river. The first ducks to reach the mouth win prizes for their owners.

As you explore the Capilano River Regional Park, consider its multifaceted role. It provides drinking water. It supports fish populations. It offers recreation. It has even appeared on the silver screen. The Capilano River Regional Park embodies the harmony of nature and human activity.
