“Can you imagine this tower being someone’s office?” From where you stand, gazing up at the Damara Tower, it seems almost unfathomable. This grand structure, an emblem of Swakopmund, started its life not as a tourist attraction, but as the heart of commerce. Built in 1905, the Damara Tower was originally part of the Woermannhaus, headquarters for the Damara & Namaqua Trading Company. This imposing building, designed by Friedrich Höft, quickly became a landmark in the burgeoning town. The tower itself served a crucial purpose. Known initially as a “water tower”, it provided a much-needed vantage point. Observers perched atop the tower, scanning the horizon for the arrival of ships laden with goods or ox wagons emerging from the desert haze. The Damara Tower, you see, was the pulse of early Swakopmund, connecting the town to the outside world. Today, the tower offers something different, yet equally as valuable – a breathtaking panorama of Swakopmund.
