What happened to the nuns of the Ex-convento della Celestia? Founded back in 1119 by the Celsi family, the Ex-convento della Celestia was once a place of quiet contemplation, home to Cistercian nuns. The nuns led strict lives, dedicated to prayer and service. However, whispers began to circulate about their conduct, unsettling rumors that reached even the highest church authorities. By the 16th century, these whispers escalated into outright scandal. The nuns of the Ex-convento della Celestia were repeatedly reprimanded for what was deemed “immorality”. Despite the warnings, their behavior didn’t change. Eventually, the church was forced to take action. The complex was suppressed in 1810 and turned over to the navy. The church met an unfortunate end, demolished to make way for naval facilities. Only the cloister designed by the renowned Andrea Palladio in 1571 still stands as a testament to the convent’s existence.
