The Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel wasn’t always here. Its story began in 1899. The original structure a humble red brick building stood on a different site altogether. Dedicated in 1901 it served the growing Catholic community. But it was too small. The burgeoning population needed a larger space for worship. So in the 1920s the current magnificent building arose.
This stunning Byzantine-style structure is a visual masterpiece. Inspired by the Cathedral in Ravenna Italy it is a grand symbol of faith. The architectural firm Murphy & Olmsted designed the building. John Joseph Earley an acclaimed architectural sculptor contributed his expertise. He pioneered a unique technique. Earley beautified the concrete by infusing it with fragmented quartz stones. Then he skillfully scraped away the concrete’s surface revealing the glistening stones. The Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel’s location is itself a fascinating detail. Local lore suggests it was built off 16th Street. Mainline Protestant churches dominated 16th Street at the time. Their leaders allegedly opposed a Catholic church joining them. This story adds a layer of intriguing local history to the chapel’s narrative.
The chapel is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant hub for the community. It’s a spiritual home to many lower-income immigrant families. Masses are regularly celebrated in Spanish Portuguese English Haitian Creole and Vietnamese reflecting the diversity of its congregation.
The Franciscan Capuchin Order administers the chapel. Its current pastor Fr Emilio Biosca Agüero continues a tradition of service and spiritual guidance. Fr Moises Villalta who preceded him made history as the first Salvadoran-American pastor. The Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel also boasts a long history of social justice ministry. It’s been a frequent host of the District’s labor Mass. It’s also the home of the Hermano Pedro homeless outreach program. The chapel remains a beacon of hope and compassion in the community.
