“An institution for the next generation.” That’s how the community describes Masjid Al Jannah.

Masjid Al Jannah is located on Ellesmere Road in Scarborough. It stands as a testament to Toronto’s diverse Muslim community. It is a place of worship and a center for Islamic education.

Let’s step inside Masjid Al Jannah. It began observing Ramadan on a Saturday. You might notice something unique here. Single-mold plastic wudu facilities offer a modern touch. The green color stands out.

Upstairs you can hear prayers. Study circles often take place. There is a sense of tranquility here. Many people live close by. They arrive just before the call to prayer.

During Ramadan, the community breaks fast together. Sticky dates and water are often served. Downstairs iftar brings everyone together. You can see both men and women sharing a meal. Samosas are common. The lentil soup is distinctly Sri Lankan.

Masjid Al Jannah has become a reality through volunteers. It is the largest of the Sri Lankan Masjids in the GTA. About 1000 Sri Lankan Muslim families live in Toronto. Approximately 300 families are close to the Masjid.

Many Sri Lankan Muslims came to Toronto after 1983. The Canadian government eased immigration rules for refugees. They were fleeing the war in their home country. Muslim Sri Lankans lived throughout Sri Lanka. They were a minority within other minorities.

Like Bosnians, Sri Lankan Muslims have diverse roots. They have both Tamil and Sinhalese heritage. During the civil war, both sides suspected them. Islam became a central identity.

The community mobilized quickly to buy the building. They didn’t rely on overseas funding. Members debated if they could afford the 3.4 million dollar price. They raised enough to make an offer.

Here is an interesting fact. The original owners helped with a Shariah-compliant loan. The original owners were Freemasons. Masjid Al Jannah was once a Masonic Temple. The Freemasons wanted it to remain a place of worship.

During prayers the congregation is cosmopolitan. Sri Lankans run the Masjid. Over 500 Muslim families of various backgrounds attend. Masjid Al Jannah serves as both a destination and a neighborhood Masjid. People come from afar. Others walk across the street to pray.

Masjid Al Jannah ensures the next generation doesn’t lose its identity or faith. It stands as a symbol of unity and community.
