Completed in 1896 the Church of the Holy City stands proudly. It’s a magnificent structure a testament to faith and architectural skill. This isn’t just any church. The Church of the Holy City is a Swedenborgian church. That means its teachings are rooted in the Bible but illuminated by the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg a fascinating Swedish scientist and mystic. Imagine hundreds of worshippers filling this space honoring God through Swedenborg’s teachings. Andy King the Bible study leader mentions the congregation has never been large enough to fill it. Even so the Church of the Holy City strives to connect with its worldwide Swedenborgian community through its website and online forums.

The building itself is stunning. Designed by the renowned architect Paul J Pelz the same architect who later designed the Library of Congress the Church of the Holy City is a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. Its incredible tower with far-reaching pinnacles is a striking feature. But its beauty belies a history of challenges. Over a century of weather and even an earthquake have taken their toll on the tower. Decades ago concerns about its condition were recorded in church meeting minutes. Major renovations were undertaken in 2022 including the critical repair of the tower. This involved using cranes to inspect the structure revealing significant damage. Several pinnacles were removed preventing potential accidents. The restoration was not only a victory for preservation but also a testament to the enduring spirit of the congregation.

The Church of the Holy City is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of community and spiritual exploration. Even with a small congregation the church provides a space for fellowship and Bible studies. Stories shared within its walls offer glimpses into the lives and faith of its members. Tales of memorable first communions and even unorthodox celebrations like a communion using chips reveal a unique blend of tradition and individuality.
