In 1929, a revolutionary house sprouted in Weimar, like a prefabricated flower. This is Haus Neufert. Ernst Neufert, a Bauhaus protégé, envisioned a home that blended modern architecture with nature’s embrace. Haus Neufert stands as a testament to his vision. The house, a perfect 10×10 meter square, became an experiment in timber frame construction, inspired by American balloon framing techniques. Imagine prefabricated parts arriving from a local carpentry, meticulously designed to minimize manual labor. In a mere six weeks, the house was complete. The ground floor of Haus Neufert welcomed a multifunctional workroom and a kitchen with its own separate entrance. A central staircase connected all rooms, while long window bands stretched across multiple spaces, blurring the lines between inside and out. The tent-like roof, extending far beyond the walls, offered a protective embrace against the elements. Upstairs, the family’s bedrooms and bathroom nestled under the eaves. Two of the rooms opened onto a balcony, inviting the outdoors in. Neufert’s original vision extended beyond the house itself. He imagined a self-sufficient garden teeming with fruit trees and vibrant flowerbeds. A water ring line, designed for automatic irrigation, hinted at his innovative spirit. Even a compost heap and septic tank found their place in his plans, showcasing a holistic approach to sustainable living. After German reunification, Haus Neufert underwent a meticulous restoration, returning it to its original glory. Today, the house stands not only as a family home, but also as a window into the innovative mind of Ernst Neufert. The trees in the garden still whisper tales of his ambition, a reminder of a man who saw architecture not just as shelter, but as a harmonious dance between human ingenuity and the natural world.
