The building you see before you wasn’t always so striking. In its place once stood the old Mechanics Building. Damaged during the war it was later demolished. The Gmach Inzynierii Srodowiska rose from those ashes between 1970 and 1977. Its construction was a significant undertaking. Architects Stefan Jaczewski and Jan Reda of the Warsaw Office of General Construction Design created a unique structure. They designed it with two wings a ten-story western wing and a seven-story southern wing.
Originally the building’s facade featured decorative panels. These panels interrupted horizontal bands of windows. They were covered in a vibrant mosaic. The mosaic used ceramic tiles in shades of water turquoise blue and navy. This was a bold departure from the other buildings on campus. The colors were intended to evoke a sense of water and environmental harmony. A fitting tribute to the faculty housed within. During a recent modernization the southern facade’s mosaic was replaced. Solar panels now adorn that side of the building. More panels were added to the roof of both wings. A testament to the building’s dedication to sustainability. You can still see remnants of the original colorful mosaics. The ones on the courtyard wall remain.
Today the Gmach Inzynierii Srodowiska serves as the home of the Faculty of Building Installations Hydrotechnics and Environmental Engineering.
