“Ever found a shark’s tooth on a beach?” That’s a question many ask before visiting Nanjemoy Natural Resources Management Area Purse Area. This place was formerly known as Purse State Park. Now it is a part of the Nanjemoy Wildlife Management Area.
Nanjemoy Natural Resources Management Area Purse Area sits on the Potomac River. It is located on Wades Bay. This wooded, undeveloped area offers several activities. People come here for hunting and bird watching. Shore fishing and fossil hunting are also popular.
The beaches of the Purse Area are famous for fossil hunting. You can often find fossilized sharks’ teeth here. Bones and shell fragments also appear at low tide. They lie in the rocks and sand along the water’s edge. Check the tides before your visit. At high tide, very little beach is available.
Hunters also enjoy Nanjemoy Natural Resources Management Area Purse Area. However, only 10 hunters are allowed in the area at a time. A sign-in box is located next to the parking area. There is one permanent waterfowl blind. It is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Waterfowl hunting is best during the final part of the season.
Bird watchers can explore unmarked trails. These trails meander through a forested area. They also go along the edge of a small wetland. Be prepared with a map and compass when using unmarked trails.
Fishermen need a Bay Sport Tidal Fishing License. Wades Bay is a great fishing location. You might catch carp or large mouth bass here. White perch and other fish species are also present. During the summer months, Wades Bay fills with aquatic vegetation. This can make fishing challenging.
Nanjemoy Wildlife Management Area includes several land parcels. They are situated along the Potomac River and Route 224. These parcels were acquired beginning in 2001. The Nanjemoy WMA encompasses 1830 acres. It is open for recreational activities.
