Envision a gateway to excitement. The Dufferin Gate stands tall marking the entrance to the west end of Toronto’s Exhibition grounds. Today we will delve into the story of this iconic structure.

The Dufferin Gate. It is more than just an arch. It is a symbol of Toronto’s evolving architectural tastes and its dedication to progress.

The current Dufferin Gate that we see now was built in 1959. This parabolic arch made of steel and concrete rises 65 feet high. It makes quite the statement.

But how did we get here? What stood here before this modern arch?

Let’s travel back in time. Before this concrete arch existed, there were other Dufferin Gates. The first was a simple wooden gate marking a dirt road. In 1912 architect George W. Gouinlock designed a more elaborate structure. This gate had twin towers and decorative ironwork. It was a tribute to the growing Exhibition.

For years Gouinlock’s Dufferin Gate served as the main entrance. However, progress had other plans.

The Gardiner Expressway needed to be built. The Dufferin Gate stood in its way. The decision was made to demolish the gate. In its place a new more modern entrance would be built.

Enter architect Philip R. Brook. He designed the parabolic arch that we see today. The new Dufferin Gate was a departure from the decorative style of the past. Its clean lines reflected a shift towards a modern aesthetic.

The Dufferin Gate’s design was not without controversy. Some critics called it a “loopsided hoop” or “half an egg.” However, others saw its simple dignity.

Interestingly, the Dufferin Gate predates the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Toronto’s arch was completed in 1959 while the St. Louis arch was finished in 1965.

The Dufferin Gate has been altered a bit over the years. Fountains with colored lights were replaced with planters. Still, the Dufferin Gate remains a landmark. It stands as a testament to Toronto’s past and present.

So as you pass through the Dufferin Gate, remember its story. Think of the wooden gates, the twin towers and the debates about modern design. The Dufferin Gate is more than just an entrance. It is a gateway to Toronto’s history.
