Did you know that Rindö wasn’t always called Rindö? Until 2015, this urban area was known as Oskar-Fredriksborg. The name came from the nearby Oskar-Fredriksborg Fortress.

Rindö is part of the Stockholm archipelago. Vaxholm itself consists of 70 islands, 57 of which are inhabited. Some islands can be reached by bridge or car ferry. Others, only by boat. Rindö is easily accessible by the yellow road ferry from Vaxholm.
Rindö spans 186 hectares. In 2020, it had a population of 1,390. The population density is about 720 people per square kilometer.
Once you arrive on Rindö, consider bringing a bike. It is an easy way to get around the island. Explore the former barracks area at Oxdjupet. It has been transformed into modern housing.

Just a short distance from Rindö is Vaxholmen island. It is located midway between Vaxön and Rindö. Vaxholmen is best known for Vaxholms Kastell. This fortress defended Stockholm from sea invasions. Today, Kastellet houses the Vaxholms Fästnings Museum. It also offers conference facilities and a restaurant for booked groups.
While exploring Vaxholm, remember its rich history. The Vaxholm line was built to defend the fortress. From 1914 to 1925, it was the main fortress line in the Stockholm archipelago. It consisted of 23 battery and mining locks.
