UTS Central

Completed in August 2019, UTS Central stands as a modern marvel. It contrasts sharply with its Brutalist neighbour, the UTS Tower. UTS Central, also known as Building 2, culminates the University of Technology Sydney’s ambitious City Campus Master Plan. This billion-dollar project reshaped the campus. It brought a new heart to the university. This striking glass structure houses the Faculty of Law and the UTS Library. Imagine 48 different types of glass, 3600 pieces in all, forming a shimmering facade. Some of these glass panels are enormous, nearly 20 feet long and weighing almost 1500 pounds. The building itself is a dual structure. A 10-story tower twists upwards from a 5-story podium. Two more levels extend underground, creating a bustling hub of activity. Inside UTS Central, a unique double helix staircase winds its way from level 4 to 7. Crafted from Australian steel and glass, this staircase echoes the structure of DNA. It serves as a symbol of the scientific and technological advancements driving our world forward. The design, a collaborative effort between FJMT architects and a leading Australian stair designer, is one of four unique architectural staircases within the building. The UTS Library, relocated from Building 5, now thrives in its new home within UTS Central. Directly connected to the library retrieval system beneath Alumni Green, the library spans three levels. It seamlessly integrates with the UTS Reading Room. This room offers inspiring views of Alumni Green and access to two outdoor terraces. UTS Central also boasts cutting-edge learning spaces like the Hive Superlab. Located on level 1, it can hold 270 students. Its special audio-visual equipment, including bone conduction headphones, allows seven classes to run concurrently. The building even accommodates three massive collaborative classrooms. Two can hold 350 students each, while a third fits 198. And for the Faculty of Law students, UTS Central provides moot and trial courts equipped with the latest technology. Even a public food court with eight outlets and 440 seats resides on level 3. UTS Central is not just a marvel of modern architecture, it’s a sustainable one too. It aims for a 5 Star Green Star rating. The building features intelligent sensors that regulate heating and cooling based on occupancy. It utilizes recycled water and adjustable louvre blinds connected to the building management system. Chilled water from nearby Central Park cools UTS Central and other campus buildings. UTS Central stands as a testament to innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to creating a vibrant learning environment.
